Pastoral and SMSC
Through its pastoral care arrangements and provision, St Pius X Catholic Preparatory School demonstrates its continuing concern for the personal development of all its pupils, regardless of their age or ability, as individuals and as successful and fully participating members of the school and its wider community.
We strive to create a culture of listening throughout the school so that all children feel safe and secure in the knowledge that there are staff who will respond to their concerns and support them; this approach has been adopted by all adults at the School.
This enables our children:
- to cope with the effect of growing up in the 21st Century
- to deal with ever-changing home backgrounds
- to maximise learning
- to be embraced in a safe and secure arena
Our overall pastoral aims are:
- to promote a happy and caring environment which will stimulate children
- to fully support the intellectual and physical development of everyone at our school
- to provide a broad, balanced and challenging curriculum, that fully caters for the wide range of abilities and enables pupils to experience success
- to develop pupils’ self-confidence and self-discipline
- to encourage children to value one another and to respect the views of other members of our community
- to prepare children for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of their future adult life
- to build up pupils’ esteem, encouraging them to be assertive where appropriate, and help them to make informed choices in terms of right and wrong
SPIRITUAL, MORAL, SOCIAL AND CULTURAL
Our children really do understand the importance of pastoral care - and know that it is part of their responsibility as a national citizen to be concerned with their own and others’ wellbeing.
Self-worth underpins and enriches everything we do, and the extremely high standard of community wellbeing at St Pius X was a major contributory factor in our recent award of Gold Standard SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural) National Quality Mark, resulting in an invitation to become a Beacon School.
Particular strengths were acknowledged:
- “SMSC is fully embedded in the life, culture and learning of the school. It features in all aspects of the pupils’ personal and academic development. It is evident in the way staff, governors and pupils talk about the school, treat each other and their confidence to explore ideas that this is held in high regard. They are eager to discuss the different religions and faiths in the world and understand why it is important that we know all about them to prevent discrimination.”
